In the lead up to Christmas, we're guaranteed to see the universal version of Santa Clause which is typically a Caucasian male. However in a world that needs more representation, here are two reasons why having a version of Santa who is black is important and why you should buy black Santa themed gifts.
- REPRESENTATION
Over the last few years, there’s been a shift in brands offering products that cater towards black audiences. Buying Afrocentric and black Santa wrapping paper is a small yet strong way of showcasing more black representation with the benefit being that black consumers get to see products that look like them and also products they can relate to. As such gifts with tailored representation can often leave a positive emotional impact for the buyer as well as the receiver. To give you an example of the power of such a product here is a review from a customer who purchased our black Santa wrapping paper;
“Beautifully illustrated, excellent quality, so excited to wrap my gifts in this and see the smile it will put on my family’s face. I wish I could buy a huge bulk to have under my tree every year, just in case you stop selling this. I think it’s so important and impactful for my children (2) & (4) to see this. Such beautiful and magical images representing us.”
2. UPLIFT CHILDREN
Some may argue the need for representation in things like Santa Clause for the reason that it's make believe. However Christmas is a joyous and special time for children and Santa is the leading figure during the joyous Christmas occasion Allowing children to see a black Santa reinforces notions that black people can be special characters, leading figures and people who can bring joy and happiness.
Through products and imagery we typically see in society, we’ve become accustomed to a more Eurocentric version of Santa being the norm however allowing children to see a black Santa reminds them that black people can be and are capable of anything. Whilst no child can grow up to be a black Santa clause, it’s important that at such a young age and whilst they believe in the magic of Christmas, that they’re not limited in what they think they can be and can achieve.
